Staunton Superintendent Garett Smith celebrated by school board as he prepares to retire

Standing in the lobby of Staunton's City Hall June 9, Yann Pirrone reflected on his working relationship with Staunton City Schools Superintendent Garett Smith, calling him the "fairest man" he had never known.
At the time Pirrone worked with him, Smith was the principal at Smithfield Middle School in Isle of Wight County, where Smith opened the school in 2005. Pirrone made the trip to Staunton along with three other colleagues from the Isle of Wight to help honor Smith, who is retiring June 30.
